Ion Exchange Systems
Ion-exchange units engineered to the water quality you need — from hardness removal to demineralisation and mixed-bed polishing.
Overview
Overview
Ion-exchange systems rely on resin carrying exchangeable ions. As water passes through, the resin captures unwanted ions — calcium and magnesium, or dissolved salts — and releases others in their place. When the resin is exhausted it is regenerated with a suitable solution and returns to service.
Aqua System designs, supplies, installs and commissions ion-exchange units for industry — from softening units to demineralisation (deionizer) systems and mixed-bed polishers for high-purity water — and supplies the resin and regeneration chemicals they run on.
From softening to demineralisation
In a softener, a cation resin swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium and is regenerated with brine. In demineralisation, an acid-regenerated cation resin and a caustic-regenerated anion resin work in series to remove most ions, and a mixed-bed stage can be added where higher purity is required.
Operation and regeneration
Performance depends on correctly set service runs, regeneration cycles and chemical strengths. We hand over each unit with a clear operating programme and supply replacement resin, caustic soda and hydrochloric acid for operation.
Problems we solve
Challenges this service addresses
-
Hardness causing scale
Calcium and magnesium deposits in boilers, heat exchangers and production lines.
-
Dissolved salts affecting the process
Processes that need low-salinity or demineralised water.
-
Exhausted or fouled resin
Lower capacity and short service runs caused by old resin.
-
Uncontrolled regeneration
Chemicals and water wasted by poorly set regeneration cycles.
System & treatment method
How the treatment works
-
Pre-treatment
Filtration to remove suspended solids and chlorine ahead of the resin.
-
Cation column
Removes hardness or cations.
-
Anion column
Removes anions in demineralisation systems.
-
Mixed bed (optional)
Final polishing for high-purity water.
-
Regeneration
Brine, or acid and caustic soda, depending on the resin.

Water Hardness in Industry: When Do You Need a Softener?
What water hardness is, how it affects boilers, heat exchangers and production lines, when a softener is the answer — and when you need more.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a softener and a demineraliser?
A softener only removes hardness, replacing it with sodium. A demineraliser removes most cations and anions to produce demineralised water.
How long does resin last?
Resin life depends on feed quality, the presence of chlorine or iron and regular regeneration. We track unit performance and recommend replacement when capacity drops noticeably.
Which chemicals are used for regeneration?
Salt for softeners; hydrochloric acid for cation resin and caustic soda for anion resin in demineralisation units.
Can an existing unit be upgraded?
Yes. We review the unit and the water analysis and propose resin replacement, additional stages or better controls.
